Our LGD's are a cross between Akbash & Anatolian shepherds. We do have some that are Maremma mix. Short-haired dogs are what we perfer for our situation. Great Pyrenees seem to be better in big country.
Usually all our litters are born on pasture surrounded by goats and sheep.
Our pups are weaned and brought back to headquarters. They spend a month or so in a pen with livestock to establish a bond. The dogs are born with a natural instinct to protect.
People often ask us how to train a LGD. Our reply is to get them with the livestock you want them to guard as early in life as you can. Handle and pet them only when they are with those livestock. These dogs are not pets!! They are driven to protect their livestock.
-Only socialize with the dogs when they are with livestock.
-Do not bring them inside even if the weather looks bad.
-Keep them with livestock at all times.
